In selecting one force over another, will to power does not obey criteria of choice or distinction. The selection is a self-defining process. Will to power is not a subject of this process. Will to power expresses itself as selection, and does not stand outside of selection as a judge or a subject. Experience is the field of intellectual and sensory activity where separate sense impressions acquire the structure that we think of as a world made up of objects. It is in this sense that experience is inherently rational. According to Kant, we cannot conceive of an experience that is not rationally ordered in this way The ultimate expression of this rationality within experience is self-consciousness, which for Kant is the guarantee of the unity of experience, the most basic justification for saying that our ordering concepts are applicable to sense impressions.

This Socratic conception of thought as judgement brings us back to Kant. For Kant is seen by Deleuze as the culmination of the philosophy of judgement within a philosophy of self-conscious subjectivity. In his study on Kant, Deleuze pays particular attention to the internal structure of judgement in Kant's philosophy. It is the outcome of our synthesis of sense impressions through the application of categories that we are able to identify and to recognize individual objects. '7 Deleuze thus identifies a problem of reference in Kant: how is it that the series of impressions that I have can be made to refer to an identifiable individual object?
