The F-117B designation was reused to describe a much more modified aircraft. In this proposal the wing sweep was reduced, wing span extended, and weapons bays significantly enlarged to allow a greater variety of weapons to be carried. The vertical stabilizers were reduced in both sweep and incline, and a conventional horizontal stabilizer was added. F414 engines developed for the still-borne Navy A-12 program were used, allowing an increase in gross takeoff weight to 73,250 pounds. Payload doubled to 8,000 pounds, while the radius of action increased to 1,000 nm.
Each aircraft cost An RF-117 reconnaissance variant for the Air Force would have used a side-looking electro-optical sensor in a ventral canoe that replaced one of the two weapons bays. The other weapons bay would still be available to carry the normal range of stores. No other changes were proposed, but apparently funding was not available to pursue the idea. 5 billion for procurement. Development added $2 billion, and military construction amounted to $295 million. The cost of various upgrades account for the difference.
In an attempt to reduce the signature of the ports as much as possible, the ports use a faceted shape. It took a lot of experimentation to provide probes that had orifices sufficiently large to gather acceptable air data, yet small enough to have minimal impact on the RCS. The initial order was for five FullScale Development (FSD) aircraft, although the Tactical Air Command (TAC) quickly established a requirement for 20 production versions. Two of the FSD aircraft would be refurbished, allowing TAC a single 18 aircraft squadron and four attrition aircraft.
