Later that summer, he was diagnosed with ALS. In 1940, he worked for the City of New York as a parole commissioner. By the spring of 1941, however, Gehrig was confined to his home, and by May 1941, he was bedridden and barely able to move. He died on June 2, 1941, at the age of 37 years (68). 10 Gordon Lou was physically active and durable, as were other athletes who developed ALS.
Although deemed idiosyncratic at the time, their ideas led to newly accepted approaches to the treatment of ALS. They helped 12 Gordon pioneer the use of mechanical ventilation in patients with ALS, used feeding tubes before the development of the percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, coordinated home visits for ALS patients, and used the full continuum of health care for patients with ALS. Forbes Norris also made important epidemiologic contributions, collecting data about his own patients in the San Francisco area, and he was the first to emphasize the long duration of PMA.
His two textbooks, Diseases of the Nervous System and Clinical Neurology, were written clearly and precisely, and both went into several editions (63). Following the lead of Gowers, he grouped PMA, PBP, and ALS into one disease. He conceived the term ‘‘motor neuron disease’’ in 1933, which is still used, rather than ALS particularly in England (64). He guided public and political opinion in public health policy. His honors included the presidency of the Royal College of Physicians of London and of the Association of British Neurologists, Fellowship of the Royal Society, and honors bestowed by foreign institutions.
