Faulkner manifested a keen interest in airplanes and aviation from the time he and his brothers, as young boys, sought to build and fly a makeshift plane in their parents’ backyard. In July 1918, attracted to the romantic, adventurous image of the World War I flyer, he enlisted in the Canadian branch of the Royal Air Force; he was still enrolled in the pilot training program in Toronto when the war ended a few months later. Not having earned his wings or fought in the war, however, did not deter Faulkner from returning home to Oxford, wearing a pilot’s uniform about town, and spreading stories about his participation in dogfights over Germany.

It was a Ford phaeton so old its glass windows were missing and its floorboards admitted views of the streets passing beneath. Mr. Bill, the speaker claimed, never 24 AUTOMOBILE got it out of second gear. Such neglect of his own automobile and perhaps of driving itself seems perfectly appropriate for a writer who treated automobiles with deep suspicion and neglect. Faulkner’s neglect can be startling: In two novels, automobiles that could advance the plot simply disappear. In Sanctuary, Gowan Stevens’s automobile, presumably still lying wrecked but identifiable at the scene of Tommy’s murder, seems to vanish.
